Please note Hillyard Street was called Russell Street in 1881 – see here.
Kelly’s Directory 1881 tells us that at 2 Russell Street was Mr Isaac Beale, a bootmaker.

Mr Beale can be seen living at this property for the next thirty years, appearing on the Census of 1871, 1881 and 1891. His daughter Catherine is present until the Census of 1891 where it appears that she had left home.

My paternal grandmother Rose Nichols (Nee Rose May) was born at no 2 Russell Cottages, Russell Street, (Now Hillyard Street) on 24th Nov 1880. Her father was a local Painter / Decorator / Plasterer in the area.
Reading some of the history of the former Russell Street, does anyone have any information about Russell Cottages and what happened to them?
I see there was a Bootmaker (Isaac Beale living and working at no 5 Russell Street for many years. My paternal great grandfather James Nichols, also lived in the area was also a bootmaker. I wonder if there was any connection with the Beale business.
I would be grateful for any information that may be available.
Many thanks and kind regards,
Robin Nichols
