Number 20 Russell Street 1881 – Isaac Stokes, Bookbinder

Kelly’s Directory 1881 tells us that at 20 Russell Street was Mr Isaac Stokes, a general grocer.

Expanding on the info taken from Kelly’s Directory and looking at the Census we find out a little more…

On the Census of 1871 Isaac is nowhere to be seen, aged 18 at the time he presumably had left home albeit temporarily. The family setup at number 20 consisted of Isaac’s parents and three siblings.  The book trade seems to be a common profession for the Stoke’s children. By the Census of 1881 Isaac is seen living at home again, his father now deceased and only his mother and brother James living at home despite his being listed as married…
