Number 30 Brixton Road in Kelly’s Directories 1881 to 1928

Number 30 Brixton road can be seen above in this modern photograph, it is the property currently occupied by William Hill with Equitable Solicitors above it. This premises has gone through a multitude of uses and as with numbers 26 and 28 it appears to have begun life as a residential premises. It is then one half of a double fronted wallpaper and builders suppliers along with number 28. After this is becomes a place for the local cabbies that worked further up the road at the General Motor Cab Company to meet, offer work and raise money for ‘sick benefit’ (there was no sick pay back then). In the most modern Kelly’s Directories that I have access to (1926 & 1928) the cabbies share the premises with Mr Vincent Ernest and his school of dancing.

Although attached, number 30 differs from number 28 in architectural style, this new style continues along to number 34 where it changes again back to same style as 26 & 28. It’s as though the middle of the block was rebuilt, I wonder why this was? There is a number change around 1890, perhaps the buildings were in need of a refit.
