I have been able to find very little regarding the George IV public house that once sat on Russell (now Hillyard) Street.

Kelly’s Directory 1881 tells us that in 1881 Mr James William Chettle was landlord here at the time the directory was put together. It seems that between Kelly’s being published and the Census conducted the business had changed hands.
From looking at the Census of the same year, a young chap called Mr Alfred Bennett is listed as the landlord, living at the property with his wife Eliza.
