Number 1a Holland Street 1881 – Ann Carter, Servants Registry

Kelly’s Directory 1881 tells us that at 1a Holland Street was Ann Carter who ran a Servants Registry.

Expanding on the info taken from Kelly’s Directory and looking at the Census we find out a little more…

I have been unable to find Mrs Carter on the 1881 Census, she is undoubtedly on it as she is on the 1891 Census ten years later in the same property however the Census records that I currently have access to do not list this part of the street. I’ll get my hands on better records soon hopefully.

Looking at the 1891 Census …Mrs Carter appears to live alone and is listed on the Census as a Stationer, the Victorian equivalent of an administrator. Mrs Carter would be responsible for the bookkeeping aspects of the business of supplying domestic servants, a profession undertook by thousands of women in the Nineteenth Century.
